Kiln Project
Plastic disposal is a problem for many communities. While most plastics burn at low temperatures they produce a lot of unpleasant and dangerous compounds as they do so. Much higher temperatures are needed than a simple open fire can produce. By following this method it is possible to dispose of plastic relatively safely. The method works best in firm sand, such as on a beach near the high tide mark.
Dig a hole in the sand about half a meter (1-2 feet) deep and only just wide enough to contain the plastic waste to be disposed of.
Dig two additional holes close by on each side and then tunnel through to the center hole at the bottom.
Start your fire in the center hole with wooden sticks and a fire-lighter or two. When it is burning fiercely you will hear it roar.
Add the rubbish, keeping the level of the rubbish below ground level.
Tip: pack plastic bottles with light plastics and papers.
- Add more wood as needed, keeping the level well below the top of the hole.
Warning: The fire is very hot. Never stand downwind and be careful of exploding bottles.
Burning plastic is a last resort when no other method works. Best is to avoid plastic packaging in the first place.
